Joint Savings Goal Calculator for Couples

Joint Savings Goal Calculator for Couples on UnderstandShe.com

Planning to save money with a partner? This free Joint Savings Goal Calculator shows how much to save each month, how long a shared goal will take, how to split contributions fairly, and how interest can help. It works with any currency and runs entirely in your browser.

Sets the symbol, number format and smallest unit for that currency. No exchange-rate conversion is applied, so enter every amount in this one currency.

How the Calculations Work

Every calculator shares one set of inputs, so a number you enter once appears in the other calculators too. Changing an input marks the earlier result as out of date until you press Calculate again.

Conventions used

Annual interest is treated as a nominal rate. With compounding m times a year, the monthly rate is r = (1 + rate / m)^(m / 12) - 1. Contributions are made once a month, at the end of the month unless you choose the beginning. Durations are whole months. A target date is converted to months by counting calendar months from today and rounding any part month up. Negative interest rates are not supported. Displayed amounts are rounded to the selected currency's smallest unit (2 decimals for USD, INR and GBP, 0 for JPY, 3 for KWD), while internal calculations keep full precision.

Required monthly savings

Without interest: (target - current savings) / months. With interest, the tool solves the future value equation for the contribution: FV = savings * (1 + r)^n + contribution * ((1 + r)^n - 1) / r. At the beginning of the month, the contribution term is multiplied by (1 + r). When r is zero, the plain division formula is used. Existing savings count once.

Time to reach a goal

With interest, the balance is rolled forward month by month using the same monthly rate and timing until it reaches the target, up to 100 years. If it never gets there, the tool says so instead of showing a date.

Partner contributions

Percentages must total 100. Partner A is rounded to the smallest unit of the selected currency and Partner B receives the remainder, so the two shares always add up exactly to the total.

Inflation

If you enter an inflation rate, the result also shows the final balance in today's purchasing power. Your target is not increased, so inflation is applied once.

Why can real results differ?

Interest rates change, banks compound and credit interest on their own schedules, and fees, taxes and rounding all matter. Treat every figure as an estimate, not a guarantee. This tool does not give personal financial advice and never connects to your accounts.

Common Questions

How much should we save each month to reach our goal?

Use the Joint Savings Goal Calculator tab with the required contribution mode. Enter the target, what you have now and how many months you have.

How much should each partner contribute?

Use the Joint Monthly Contribution tab. An equal split is only one option, so you can set any percentages that total 100, such as 60 and 40.

How much more do we need to save?

The Shortfall tab compares your current plan with the target and shows the extra monthly amount needed.

Can we plan several goals at once?

Yes. The Goal Planner adds up the monthly amount each goal needs and compares it with your monthly budget.

Is my information stored or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is saved or uploaded. A PDF report is also made on your device.
